With today's announcement of Google Gears - "an open source browser extension that lets developers create web applications that can run offline" - I'd like to make a somewhat obvious prediction that GMail will feature a disconnected mode within, say, 2 years.
It looks like Google is seriously entering the desktop space.

I've already got that. it's called kmail. ;)
...except kmail has much more powerful filtering. and gpg support. and so on.
Already have been using that for about 2 months. It's called MailPlane ATM only available for OSX but who knows...

Wonderful application works seamlessly with GMail and it's getting better by the day. I was so lucky to be selected as one of the beta testers.
